On this day, September 11th, 2013, I, like many Americans, am remembering the day 12 years ago that changed history forever.

I will never forget the look of terror on my 5th grade teacher’s face as he closed the windows and locked the door. All of my classmates and I sat tight in our seats, unaware that our country was under attack as our parents filed in the classroom to take us home early.
When we got home my Mom sat, watching the television, tears streaming down her face, unable to say anything.
I certainly won’t forget how that day affected the rest of my childhood. Whenever a plane flew over my house, I would pull the covers over my head and shudder. I was scared–our nation was scared. But out of the terror was a sense of pride and hope that united.
And on that day, there were American heroes. And I can do nothing but utter thanks and gratitude to those men and women.
Also to the families of the victims. To the children who have grown up without a Mom or a Dad. Thank you.
It’s too easy to get comfortable in the day-to-day. It’s important to feel the sting of that day in September– to remember the pain and the terror and the heroes that united our country. I was just a child then; but as a young adult, the statistics of that day are just astounding. Numbers will never represent the hearts and hugs and family that were lost, but they allow me to feel a fraction of the sting of that day, to remember it all over again.
Prayers today for our beautiful country, and mostly for the beautiful people who live here. For neither will ever be forgotten.
