My husband and I have so much freedom right now–we don’t own a home, we don’t have children, and both of our jobs are flexible. But we rarely go on spontaneous adventures! I am definitely a planner, and I always like to be prepared, neither of which translate well into making last-minute plans. I want to change this. All of the heavy responsibilities will come soon enough–for now, I want to work on planning for more spontaneity this year!

Hi Blair, I’ve also read that it can be useful to introduce small changes into your normal routine so that you don’t get stuck in a rut and are more open to bigger moments of spontaneity. For example brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand or going to a different coffee shop or taking a different route on a walk. On a personal note, I’ve had a non-welcome routine change over the past 3 weeks because I had to have tests to rule out cancer. I just wanted to say that I loved coming to your blog during the long wait for appointments and tests. You helped to take my mind away from my worries and it was a big help. I got the all clear yesterday so am back to my normal routine – but much more grateful for things which I took for granted before. Thanks x.

Great ideas! I definitely need to keep a full set of clothes in my car. Last summer, coworkers invited me to go for a run after work and I had to decline on the spontaneous workout because I only had sneakers and a fleece.
