Have you heard of Diamond Candles? It’s a company in Durham, North Carolina that delivers exactly what you’d expect…or maybe what you’d least except.

Diamond Candles sells candles. But every candle the company sells has a ring valued anywhere between $10 and $5,000 inside. By burning the candle, the melted wax will reveal a small foil pouch containing a shiny new accessory. The fun of it? Every ring is different…both in appearance and value!
Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to purchase one. When I saw that there was a Living Social coupon for any Diamond Candle for just $12 (instead of the usual $25), I jumped at the chance!
My Apple Slice scented candle arrived just a few days later. The packaging was genius. The glass candle was well protected but also extremely easy to remove. Reminded me of Amazon’s frustration-free packaging.
Basically, all I had to do was pop out the four corners and slip the candle out of the box. Easy enough, right?
Revealing this delicious-smelling-ring-bearing jar of soy candle.
Which I burned until I saw the foil pouch (it took over 10 hours!), and then I removed it from the candle carefully with a pair of tweezers! Revealing this beaut…
Not too shabby right? (Don’t mind the green wax on my knuckles…I had a little too much fun diggin’ out my ring! :)).
As far as a future for Diamond Candles? It’s hard for me to say. I think the company has a fun, quirky idea, especially for gifts. But the $25 price tag has me worried. That’s a bit much for a novelty in my opinion. Something to the tune of $15 or so would be more marketable.
Also, the company doesn’t seem to have a distinct target market. This seems to be more of a gift idea than anything. This probably isn’t a product that most people will buy for themselves…except for me…but then again, I guess I’m not like most people!
But a gift for who? For husbands to give to their wives? As an anniversary gift? For friends to give to each other as a birthday gift? For Moms to give to their daughters? All of the above?
I think a more specified market would help Diamond Candles in a big way. What if the company partnered with a subset of Pro Flowers, and offered Diamond Candles in their line of gifts? Or what if the company worked with Wantful to have the candles as an option in the catalog database?
